I did indeed go to the mini culture festival with my sister and her two littlest. It was fun! We got to hammer mochi :D By which I mean that I got to hammer mochi, since my nephew was too shy and my sister didn't want to hand me the baby just for that. The concert portion started a little late but the wait was worth it, imo. Still no snow or rain but it was a bit chilly for the littles, so we didn't stay for the whole performance and headed inside the museum where the other part of the event was being held.

There were only a few tables. One had a lady doing calligraphy; my sister got her name in katakana and I got neko (cat) in kanji because I panicked and it was the first thing I thought of. Nephew was again too shy to ask for anything. There was another area showing off traditional Japanese toys and my sister tried out a couple but nephew was unmoved, lol. We also got to try out a guitar-like instrument I've forgotten the name of and looked at a handful of handmade items for sale. Then we sat and had some mochi, red bean soup, sweet cake and matcha. I had hoped we'd get to see the matcha being prepared but alas. I really liked the presentation of the matcha, even if they were using cheap plastic dishes, but it tasted like grass to me as usual. Everything else was really tasty, though.

We didn't stay long-- it was a short event-- but we left feeling like it was worth the trip.

I haven't been making a lot of public posts of late, but with how things are going in the U.S., I figured people might be interested in this idea, which is basically to unsubscribe from whichever services you can that are supportive of ICE or overly involved with the Trump regime. Probably a lot of you have already done as much, but I found Scott Galloway's layout of it helpful, so I unsubscribed from what I could. I don't really have that many subscriptions in the first place, but it was still nice to do something proactive.

I removed comments from this post just because I don't want to get into too much conversation on politics or what does and doesn't work. I'm more about keeping it light on the Internet, but I think it's fair to say things are not going great, and there's no way to completely avoid talking about the reality we're in, so I figured I'd share this as an option.

And just like that, we're through the first week of February. Somehow. Hasn't been the best start to the month for me but the rest of the month is still ahead. In the meantime, here's my weekly curriculum post.

We might be getting snow again??

Tbh, I'll be very surprised if we do. Up until now, they were saying that it's going to get a lot warmer starting this weekend, almost spring weather. I know these things can change, of course, but it already feels like there's been a big shift in the atmosphere. Schools were even open today! I only glanced at the weather map but the clouds looked to me like they're going to get caught in the mountains again. I don't guess it matters much anyway. The accompanying temperatures were all above freezing, so it wouldn't stick.

Assuming the weather minds its manners this weekend as I expect, I think I'll probably go to that event I got the reschedule notice about back when they first started calling for snow. Might catch a movie while I'm out, since the event is a short one. I've been curious about Iron Lung and the downtown theater added showtimes.

The book I started today has oddly small text and I hate it a lot. Like, it's only eighty-some pages this way as it is, bro. You can afford to go up to font size ten, I promise.

It's especially weird because I have another book from the same publisher in the same kind of format but with normal text. That one's only about a hundred pages, btw, so I'm doubling down on what I said above.

Nearly forgot Wip Wednesday!

I've got a couple of new people around since last time, I think, so as a refresher: Give me a word and I'll try to find it in my wips. If I do find it, I post an excerpt that includes it. If I don't find it (or if I do but the whim takes me), I have to write something using it-- but that something has to be part of a current wip, not something entirely new.

Last week, I got "reverse" as a prompt. I had sort of intended to write something to continue the last wip I posted but never got around to it. I do have one wip that uses it, though, so here's that excerpt:

Well, I was still nauseated when I woke up, enough so that I ended up calling out. I don't love to lose the PTO, especially with the weather situation still kinda touch and go, but I figured better safe than sorry. It's definitely just sinuses but if I ended up puking, which I felt at the time like I might, they only would've sent me home anyway. At least this I saved the cost of rides back and forth for the day.

Oh, yeah, did I tell you guys that I forgot to switch my default payment method for my ride apps, so I was overdrawing my account at least once a day for over a week? Over three hundred dollars in overdraft fees alone. Not a great look for me. I'm almost-- almost-- glad the weather stopped me from going out and potentially spending even more.

We got shuffled around at work again. That is a royal we, thankfully; I didn't have to move or do anything. But one person each from my office and the offices on either side of me have been moved. The girl who's been helping with my cases is sharing the space with me now. Which, y'know, makes sense. Though it is a bit frustrating to remember that the two of us are the least experienced as far as accessioning specimens is concerned. At least that's neither of our main responsibility.

Turns out we might get snow after the rain. And they keep changing the temperature predictions, so Idek how much freezing vs melting we're looking at. I'm not sure what the roads'll be like anyway, considering the treatments they did will be so watered down. School's already been called out for tomorrow. I don't expect it to affect work at all, more's the pity.

My biggest beef with the weather right now is that I'm pretty sure that it's giving me a headache. My sinuses are trying to kill me and I'm nauseated besides. Felt better for a bit, now it's getting bad again. Here's hoping it's all cleared up by morning.

Well, as expected, work opened as usual today. And, I mean, I can kinda see why. It ended up being a pretty normal day, even kinda on the busy side. Not for me, granted, I got my stuff late because only two of the lab folks showed up, but still. Once I did get it, I was occupied for the rest of the day.

The main roads aren't bad at all. I still don't think the doctors should've chosen to put the people who come in by back roads in that position but I can see why it didn't strike them as dangerous. My hill wasn't even that bad this morning and it was pretty clear when I got home. I'm still a little worried about it icing over since we're expecting rain and then more freezing temps but I'm not as worried as I was.

Didn't hear anything from work today, so I'm guessing we'll be starting as normal tomorrow. I'm sort of surprised, since we got that delay last week when the roads were treated and the storm ended up not amounting to much. Granted, I'm not sure what the roads look like now.

Honestly, it doesn't seem to be that bad out. It's cold, yeah, but there's not a whole lot of ice and the snow has some reasonable traction. People have been coming and going a bit, too, though it might just be the people with snow tires and/or four-wheel. Fingers crossed I don't have any trouble getting a ride tomorrow.

Last personal curriculum accountability post of the month! I wish I could say that I'm ending on a high note but alas. My brain has not been braining for the past week. I've barely stuck to the schedules I was so glad to have gotten figured out. I'm inclined to blame the weather but that doesn't do anything for my results.

We're actually getting some snow for this weekend. Just flurries so far but they've been falling steadily for hours and there's a fair bit of accumulation. If the forecasts called it right this time, this should go on right through Sunday morning. We'll see about that, of course.

Temperatures are expected to be in the single digits for the next few days and we're supposed to get winds below zero. Not looking forward to that. I'm also concerned about ice on the roads again. They did a good job prepping everything last weekend but apparently they were a little overzealous and used up most of the supply, which is, y'know, not great. I was hoping that if we did get snow, there'd be less to worry about because of the lack of rain. Unfortunately, the first hour or so of snowfall came when it was still just warm enough to melt, so we'll probably get a lot of black ice even if it's nothing very thick. On the bright side, I've got nowhere to go this weekend.

Snowflake Challenge: A flatlay of a snowflake shaped shortbread cake, a mug with coffee, and a string of holiday lights on top of a rustic napkin.

Challenge #15

How Did the Fandom Snowflake Challenge Go?

... Is it really the end of January? Huh. Alright then!

Anyhow, Snowflake went very well for me! Its structure gave me the jumping-off points I needed some days in order to find something to post about. I also felt very encouraged to fandom-post and more generally to share my thoughts on topics I normally wouldn't have felt I had anything interesting enough to say about. I've enjoyed answering all the prompts, even those I didn't vibe with as much. In a way, especially those I didn't vibe with as much, since they made me think outside my usual boxes. I even made notes for future posts based on some prompts, including the aforementioned, and how I could've answered them differently.

My main goal for the challenge was to answer all of the prompts-- which I did! Yay for me! I am, unfortunately, behind on my secondary goal of reading and responding to other participants' posts but I'll get around to that in the next couple of days. It was clashing with my "less screen time" and "fewer browser tabs" resolutions and so I needed to take a step back. I'm looking forward to getting caught up, though!

Wip Wednesday! I got prompted "escalate" last week and it didn't get any usable hits--barely got any unusable hits, tbh-- so I had to cook up something fresh. My newest rule for this game, in case it got missed, is that I specifically have to add on to an existing wip when this happens, rather than using it as a jumping-off point for something new. Maybe this'll help me actually finish things instead of adding onto my already precarious pile of wips, lol.

Anywho, I added onto a draft from a couple years about that I forgot. Went ahead and included the previous parts, just for fun, so if something looks familiar, it's probably because it is:

So, my favorite Transformers show is always going to be Beast Wars. Doesn't matter if any show every comes out that I can understand is better, it was my first and it's always going to be My Favorite. But I'm not here today to try to get you to watch Beast Wars. Ask in just about any Transformers fandom space what shows to watch, people will stop whatever they're doing to tell you to watch Beast Wars. But here and now, I want to try to convince you to watch Rescue Bots. Yes, the Transformers show for preschoolers.

Hear me out:

Do you like consistent continuity that avoids bogging itself down? Well, this show has got it.
How about quick, quirky humor? It's got that too.
Aliens trying to fit in on Earth and not always doing a good job? That's, like, half the premise.
Colorful characters with distinct personalities? Got 'em.
Steady development of those characters and their relationships? Yep.
Cute family dynamics balanced with interpersonal drama? Uh huh.
Firetrucks? One of the main characters is a fire truck!
Simple but satisfying musical scores? Rock on.
The voice of LeVar Burton? You're not gonna believe this...

All that, plus it was the first-- and is still the only-- Transformers show to have an episode that's a musical. You wanna argue with that, you've gotta do it in song.

Now, I might as well say that the show has some pretty obvious flaws and makes some questionable choices. It's kiddie copaganda, for one thing, albeit not on the same level as some other kid shows. The idea behind the Bots hiding in plain sight as highly advanced rescue tech only even kinda works if you don't think about it. The team has one (1) female character who is written as a "girls' girl" type but who barely interacts with other women. Each member of the human family has at least one episode involving a love interest just so you know they're all straight. The show flirts with some deeper social ideas that it is clearly not prepared to commit to. The lack of Decepticons is a novel touch but the human villains are hit or miss. One of the side characters gets shortchanged in favor of another. Aaand it probably would've made more sense for a show with so much emphasis on science! to be more, y'know, genuinely scientific rather than taking so many liberties for the sake of Rule of Cool/Funny. It's also part of the Aligned continuity, which is probably not a flaw to most people but I hate revolutionary-movement-gone-corrupt Decepticon origin stories, so it's a big one for me.

Having said all that-- and acknowledging there's probably more I'm forgetting-- I still find the show very enjoyable even as an adult. (So does my mom, as an adult who doesn't even care about Transformers, for whatever that's worth to you.) While the target demographic for the franchise is small children, the show was written to be appealing to families. Its utmost aim is telling fun stories and it hits that mark more often than not. It's episodic, so you can come in at just about any point, but it also builds on previous stories and has a plethora of background call-backs, so you get more out of watching it all the way through. optimus Prime and Bumblebee show up occasionally but not to the point where it feels like the show is relying on them for publicity. It doesn't take itself too seriously but it does play itself straight and has genuine heart. There's a lot going on under the surface, which you can choose to examine or ignore at your leisure. Above all, you can tell that the writers respected the project and the audience.

Am I gonna try to tell you that this show will change your life or expand your mind? No, of course not. It doesn't have anything revolutionary to say to anyone who's watched Mister Rogers or My Little Pony or any other show you might've grown up with. But it is crafted with care and it is fun. Which, I mean, Transformers is a children's IP first and foremost. Yes, there's a lot of room for grittier and more mature takes-- there have been plenty of those throughout the years. The show itself has its own more serious, even (relatively) intense moments. But as much as I can appreciate when the brand's media takes a harder look at its own premise, what I will always appreciate most is a new take on a kids' property that doesn't feel the need to apologize for itself. Rescue Bots knows what it is and it doesn't let that stand in the way of being a good time for fans of all ages.

Well, work started on a delay and I still ended up being late, lol. It wasn't as hard as I expected to find a ride but there were fewer drivers out than usual. Not sure if that was because of the time or the weather. Honestly, the roads weren't bad at all. Even our hill is fine. A lot of stuff was shut down just in case, though.

Several clients were closed for the day and others also opened late. Even those that were open didn't send us much. I finished what I had left over from Friday and waited for hours to get a call telling me it was time to pick up new stuff. When they hadn't called me by three, I just went over. There was a single car in the parking lot and the building was closed. They left without telling us. I still have a key, so I went in just to check if maybe they'd left some work for me in the lab and forgotten to call. Nope! Idk about the rest of the place but it seemed like no one had been in the lab all day, since the empty trays I took over on Friday weren't put up. Everything should be back to business as usual tomorrow, so at least this won't put us too far behind.

Tbh, I kinda regret bothering to go in. I'm sure I'll be glad of it later, when I want to use the PTO for something fun, but it felt like such a waste of a day. I had things I could've done at home with that time. Ah, well. At least I know what the roads are like and am contented that we're not trapped.

Oh, and another thing! That new girl at work, the one who likes Transformers, gave me a Wheeljack Blokees model kit because she got a double (they're blind-boxed) and knows I like him. It was a very simple little snap-together kit, only took about fifteen minutes, and he's pretty cute even though he's not from their chibi-style line. Blokees pretty much lost my attention with their lackluster Arcee-- and they barely had it before that, what with the lack of female characters-- but they're pretty satisfying to snap together, ngl. Too bad the Ratchet in this line is ugly and out of scale, so poor Wheeljack's gonna have to be without his man. I don't see myself bothering to pick any more up but I'm glad I have this one.
.
